Administration to Speed Up Monkeypox Vaccine Availability

HHS also plans to increase awareness about the virus.

President Biden’s administration through the Department of Health and Human Services said Thursday they are speeding up the distribution of the monkeypox vaccine.  1.8 million doses of the vaccine will be available next week, allowing states and localities to begin ordering more sooner than officials originally planned.

The White House Monkeypox Response Coordinator, Bob Fenton, said vaccines will be made available at big events with high attendance from the LBGTQ community.  HHS also plans to raise awareness about the virus and the vaccine at such events.

The administration is also preparing doses of anti-viral treatment to help those who have already tested positive for monkeypox. Beginning Monday, 50,000 patient courses of the antiviral will be made available.

“This is important,” Coordinator Fenton said. “It’s innovative, the way that we will bolster local efforts to meet people where they are and mitigate the spread of monkeypox.”

President Biden’s administration declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency on August 4.
